In February, seven new students joined the Cambodian Village Fund Scholarship Program. They all completed high school with excellent grades and dreams of pursuing a higher education. Their families are poor and cannot afford the cost of university.

Because of their scholarships, these bright, ambitious young women moved to the city of Battambang, where most live in the CVF dorm. They are attending university to study law, accounting, banking, agriculture, education and Khmer literature.

Ponthea wrote in her application, “I want to be a teacher. Teachers play an important role in education and human resource training. I want to work with children in remote villages. When a nation is rich in knowledge the country will prosper.”

We have witnessed the miracle of education firsthand as we watch poor girls with little hope, graduate from university and build incredible new lives. Their good life is not limited to themselves; it extends to their families living in the villages, their own children and generations to come and to the broader community and their country.  They are Cambodia’s new workforce changing the future forever. Imagine the power of educating just one girl.

Currently, we are able to sponsor 28 promising students and we would love to admit more. It costs $1800 per student per year to send a bright, young woman to college. The money covers tuition, expenses for books and materials, a laptop, medical and dental care, a room in the dormitory, money for groceries to cook meals and a small monthly allowance.
